Winter in the greenhouse.
2009-02-12 04:43:00
It is still very cold in the greenhouse. The spring seems to be far, far away, but I have now ordered my seeds for 2009 and that is one step in the right direction. It took me at least 8 hours to decide what to order. When looking through all the beautiful catalogues it is not an easy task to decide which ones to choose. The pictures in the glossy brochures are all overgenerous and stunning,

HEAVY STUFF - new Books on my Bedside Table
2008-12-26 02:23:00
Garden Books to be enchanted by. Look at these wonderful books that I presently have got on my bedside table. They are written by Hans Dalby, who is a Danish author. This first one is called ?Drivhus drömmar? (Greenhouse dreams) and is written in Danish which I can read with a little imagination, I have lived in the most southern part of Sweden many years ago and that is very close to Denmark so

Late harvest - Rose hip and Elderberry
2008-11-03 15:35:00
Rose hips and Elderberry harvest - beautiful berries to pick out in the nature. Mother nature just gave them to us free of charge. This is the last harvest of berries for this season Rose hips and Sambucas nigra and you may very well pick these berries now in November, if you are lucky you can also find Sloe Prunus spinosa. I pick my berries on the path leading down to the lake. They are great berries for cooking. If you are interested I have a few recipes here in Tyra's Garden.

2008-10-28 08:40:00
A Small Evaluation of the Tomatoes I had in my garden 2008 and still have actually, Moneymaker is a tough guy. These are the favourites of all tomatoes the growing season 2008. The seeds were sown indoors on my veranda on the 9th of February and then planted them in the greenhouse in May, they are all container grown in the greenhouse. A Jewel in Gothenburg - Trädgårdsföreningen
2008-09-19 08:24:00
The Palm house has been a popular destination since 1878. At close to 1000 square meters, you'll find various exotic plants, including palms of course. Located in the Palm house is ?Vattenhuset? the Water house, that has the sensational giant Water lily from the Amazon and various kinds of epiphytes that I really do like. This...

Dahlias and Mushrooms - September
2008-09-10 10:19:00
Dahlias in Tyra 's Garden. The Autumn slowly make it's entry, we haven't had any frost nights yet but soon I have to dig up all the Dahlias and store them in the garage. I wrote about tips and ideas for sorting out all the seeds you collect and the same tip is applicable for the Dahlias.Tips and ideas - Put a tag on the plant when they still are in bloom, write down the height, colour and name. It make it dead easy when you shall plant them again next spring. September, this month can be marvelous with all the lovely mild colours and fresh and almost nippy air. Long walks in the woods looking for the mushrooms, my favorite is the yellow Chanterelle Chantharellus sibarius it's so delicious. Number two on my list must be the Cep Boletus edulis Tips and ideas - A good thing about the Ceps are that they are perfect to slice up and dry for later use. suitable for cooking all through the winter months... soups, stews and pastas. yummie. The Greenhouse and potager - June
2008-06-10 13:58:00
In the greenhouse the Tomatoes and Chillies are flourishing and so are the Physalis and the Basil as well. I keep my basil indoors as long as they look happy and they certainly do. It is still very hot here in Vaxholm and no rain at all, it is so very dry and I cannot possibly water all the borders and plants, I don?t dare to do it because we get our water from our own well and I?m afraid that it will run out of water, so I just water the most important stuff like the kitchen garden and the Geraniums. My lawn looks absolutely awful all brown and crisp dry.Beautiful bottles from the Botanicus in Prague, when I bought them I think it was schampoo in them but now I have them in my greenhouse and they contains soap and fertilizer - Flaskor som jag köpt i Prag i en fantastiskt trevlig affär som heter Botanicus. My love for Cabbage
2008-05-15 20:40:00
Perhaps it sounds rather strange to say that one love cabbage, but I really do. I think there are some very beautiful varieties of cabbages. Nero di Toscana is certainly a favorite, it is so very good lookin? though not that tasty unfortunately or perhaps I don?t really know how to cook it properly. Any great recipes? This year I grow Red Express, Portland Briggs and Cabbage Kalibos. The last one is new for me, seeds from Plants of Distinction, this is what they say about Kalibos, - resurrected from the past. Ideal distinct shape and colour for pickling, coleslaw and shredding on salads. The colour remains if steamed and there is very little waste.. Sounds perfect to me. Here I proudly carry out my cabbage seedlings, time to harden off the plants before planting them in my potager. Cabbage seedlings in a box. Spring cleaning
2008-05-12 08:45:00
Well now it's done, the annual spring cleaning. It is no fun job to do but it has to be done and someone has to do it. Now I have taken all the seedling out (almost) and left in the greenhouse are the tomatoes and peppers. A few Geraniums, Auriculas and Roses just to add colour and scent. The cushions are cleaned and aired, now I have earned a nap on the sofa...but seriously, I hardly lay down for more than 5 minutes. I always seems to find something that I just have to do. But it is really nice be able to lay down those few minutes to straighten out the back, catch a moment and philosophize...Tyra
Details and Inspiration
2008-04-13 19:33:00
This picture that I have called Inspiration and Details it is from the Garden Fair - Nordic Gardens.Details - The small things in a design that completes 'the picture' you are striving for. The final touch are so important for the end result, it can be totally perfect and wonderful with the correct details and on the other hand so intolerably awful and ruin the hole thing if the details are wrong. I found a few companies at the fair that had those small details for indoor as well as outdoor design and they were very inspirational indeed. This is one of them - Fröken Tvärsemot. Funny and pretty stuff with a little bit of country romance. This is a flower shop at Alvik called Blåregn (the swedish for Wisteria). A small shop with a lot of lovely details, very inspiring. The plants are very well presented in boxes and baskets. This is a shop I can recommend. Apples - pruning and juice
2008-03-04 18:56:00
Late winter to early spring, now it's time to prune, cut and trim the apple trees, I actually do it twice a year, now and one's during the JAS period (July-Aug.-Sept). The Anthropologists in Sweden recommend the JAS pruning and I think it makes sence. During that period it is often much more dry and the trees recover faster after the pruning. Another plus is that it is a more pleasant time to do it, it's not as cold as it is at this time of the year.Vinteräpplen/Winter apples, the picture is taken in the month of October. This is one of my favorite, perfect for pies and other food. Matures in September. Unfortunately I don't know the name, do you know by any chance? Apple tree "in floribus" at Engarn. Äppelblom så ljuvligt rosa.It takes 2 kilos of apples to make 1 liter fresh apple juice. This is my favorite brand, from Kivik. Frosty flowers and fruit
2008-01-21 08:02:00
I found these absolutely lovely frosty flowers in one of my favorite blogs La Source au Bois. I know it's a little bit 'Christmas' over them but I think one can use frosty sugar flowers all year around and I wanted to show you all the beautiful pictures. You make these wonderful decorations with fresh dry flowers or fruit, egg white and sugar. The recipe isn't very difficult though my first attempt ended up in the bin. I guess I have to practise a few times....or more. Frosty Fruits, Figs, Kumquats and Lime fruit aren't they pretty?.....Thank you La Source for letting me s...
