African light
2011-11-21 02:29:00
A beautiful evening in Camps bay, South Africa. A warm light and a super cold ocean, like the country itself; filled with contrasts. More beauty and more sorrow than your eyes can take. Pics from the winter months we spent there 2010.

mdumbi, south africa
2011-10-24 16:03:00
Åk till Sydafrika, hyr en bil i Kapstaden och kör längs kusten. Stanna på alla fina ställen, surfa massa, men akta dig för vithajarna. Ta fem dagars reikarnation i Mdumbi. Sov i bykyrkan eller lyxa till det med en hydda för två.

Detta inlägg finns på svenska på min blogg Aqua Vitae ? välkommen! The other day I posted a story on my wine blog Aqua Vitae, this an English version of that post, though a bit shortened,  about an odd find. It’s not every day I find common denominators between my interest in wine and in ...

CATCH A FIRE
2008-08-22 04:07:00
2007 - A Picture Per Month
2008-01-04 19:58:00
JANUARY - this was Stockholm in winter shroud a year ago. How time flies... And how similar the weather was then compared to this now moment in time. But above all, as pretty then as it is nowFEBRUARY - was the month of one of my most amazing experience ever, so far, the South African one. On the beach in Kenton on Sea - bliss! And yes, one of these days I will continue writing about the days in Cape Town too...MARCH - I discovered the joys of Kusmi tea - and it was comforting in troublesome times... APRIL - pink cherry blossoms in Kungsträdgården, that makes my heart go all ditty! And now it's only three months away... MAY - the darling buds of May gave me one of many perfect moments in the year 2007. This was at the gardens of SvindersvikJUNE - I befriended my favourite cookbook, and the culinary delights from that has since brought countless tears of savoury joy into the eyes of dinner guests at my humble casa JULY - in the rain I met a strawberry little, and I have been wonderi...
Gratitude
2007-12-04 23:39:00
Perhaps we should express gratitude for the things we have in our lifes more often, the things we experience, the things we maybe take for granted, the people and family around us that truly mean something to us, all the things, great and small, in life that we should be grateful for. Oh so grateful.Somedays, sometimes I'm good at showing gratitude, others I'm just the average-taking-for-granted-bitching-kind-of-person. In hindsight I might even be ashamed of what I've said, and done. Granted, at certain occasions the bitching is absolutely understandable, the reasonable and right thing to do. At others it's perhaps a slight case of overreacting, though it might be the last straw and at those times there's just no way of stopping the things that come out of my mouth.I like to think that if I can evolve as a person, getting to know myself, my pros and cons and trying to become a better, more complete person, at least trying to walk in someone else's shoes for a minute or two or...
Two Shops
2007-12-02 15:26:00
Whether or not you're giving in to the *slightly* excessive Christmas consumption and shopping frenzy - myself I stopped exchanging Xmas gifts with the immediate family some years ago, still do it with a few friends though. Yes, it is rather fun to try and find, or make, the perfect gift for that special friend... - here are two lovely smallish shops in Stockholm where you definitely will find the perfect gift for most anyone.First, 49 kvadrat, at S:t Eriksgatan 88 (close to S:t Eriksplan) - with a very chatty proprietor with a passion for playing Josh Groban in the shop, and you can always ask her to turn the volume up...As the name states the shop is merely 49 squares in size and absolutely jampacked with neat interior decoration stuff, design, art, colourful china, candles, postcards, you name it. In every price range, for every wallet size and it's fairly easy to leave the shop with a bit more than you had planned for...The other one is African Touch, at Hornsgatan 64B (close ...
Sirocco, Penguins & Good Hope
2007-11-14 19:10:00
Previous post on South Africa can be found hereThe drive from Stellenbosch to Cape Town takes about one hour if you don't make any detours or stops along the way. But of course you can't just drive straight there if you're on holiday! There are just so many detours to take, so many must-sees, must-dos in that area. For example, if you like a bit of tan - responsibly obtained of course - perhaps a slight case of sunbathing at Sunrise Beach?Enjoying the atmosphere, with many interesting antique and craftsman shops, in the absolutely charming town/fishing village of Kalk Bay and having lunch at one of many tempting cafés and restaurants there. Like the wonderful open air restaurant Sirocco with a delightful, fresh menu including a dessert that's definitely one of the top five on my cheesecake-list. One of my best overall restaurant experience while in SA, if not THE best actually. Simply lovely with great music playing in the background. This is how life should be. Bliss. If you fin...
Exception to the Rule in Stellenbosch
2007-10-16 21:36:00
Previous post on South Africa, you'll find hereMyself I haven't the slightest interest in wine, but for those who do I suppose South Africa has quite a lot to offer also in that area. Therefore M had quite looked forward to the stay at a vineyard guesthouse in Stellenbosch, a charming old university town in the heart of South Africa's wineroute situated some miles east of Cape Town. Some nice wine sampling, for some, and a good dinner would be just the perfect end of a long day in the car. Little did we know...We arrived at the Knoerhoek Vineyard late afternoon and was greeted in a way that can only be described as inhospitable and rude, by an elderly woman who could hardly speak English. The room we got was far from the nice ones as seen in the pictures, but more of a shabby hostel one. Since I very much take notice of details I didn't find it very appealing to see cheap soap filled in old bottles of more expensive brands for example... The fan in the room was making so much no...
Through Meiringspoort and Barrydale to Montagu
2007-08-09 23:46:00
Time for the next chapter in the South African travelogue - to refresh the memory, here's the previous post.To avoid screaming, other than of delight, we took another scenic route than the Swartberg Pass, when we left quaint Prince Albert heading for Montagu. Namely the part of N12 which goes through the deep cleft of Meiringspoort, a 25 km long tarred road, which winds along the floor of the gorge, crossing the Groot River 25 times. To get to the gorge road we took the R407 to Klaarstroom.Quite a beautiful drive on serpentine roads, and a bit of dirt roads before we got to the gorge. Parts of the mountains really has a spectacular, sort of radiant, red glow to them. Which these pictures just don't do justice. And this road was also the place where I first encountered baboons walking on and beside the road - I just wish they hadn't been so camera shy, when we fumbled with the camera trying to snap a picture. If you can imagine these bushes away, there's actually a whole bunch of ...
WCB # 107 - Catfluences
2007-06-23 14:31:00
A very regal looking lionsculpture in Kungsträdgården (King's Garden), Stockholm. Very nicely chiseled, almost a bit scary in looks...This weekend's catblogging is not going to be about my cats in particular, but about cats in general, making pawprints all over. These past few years it's been sort of a very small hobby of mine to discover, document and now and then acknowledge these catfluence everywhere. In the public realm as well as the more private. Quite the fun thing to do, it really open your eyes for all the interesting an exquisitive details that can be found everywhere.A small lion as a waterhose device, Skogskyrkogården (The Woodland Cemetery), Stockholm.A lioness showing off her good side in Bredäng, suburb to Stockholm.A different kind of mousetrap can be found on a backstreet of Stockholm. Love the looks of those sculptures! This cat part of the giant puzzle has adorned the subway station of Bredäng ever since I was a child. Cute!Another cat and mouse play, Resarö Mar...

It is the time of blisters
2007-05-28 22:07:00
It's the best of times, it's the worst of times - I've just ordered a bunch of books online, so I felt like playing a bit with words.By the way, anyone but me who thinks it's almost to easy buy things nowadays, and I'm not even too keen on ordering online or through catalogues, I want to touch the fabric and feel the texture, try on and scrutinize the work, but when it comes to things like that book or that CD I just have to have it right now, when I actually manage to find it... And some other trinkets now and then, no to mention pearls and stones, oh my... I shouldn't have brought that up, it was ages ago since I last browse through those websites...Anyway, back to those best and worst of times. That it is now, this particular time of year, that weather and temperaturewise is so lovely in Sweden - but also rather hellish when it comes to my poor feet. I know, I've been proned to get blisters easily for ever, but last year was worse than that for ever.Every shoe, new as well...
Hallo South Africa!
2007-05-10 02:19:00
This will most probably be my last blog-entry for some weeks now - and all I have to say right now is take care out there!Me, myself and I plus M will have to take care of ourselves down in Soth-Africa for these upcoming weeks, basking in the sun, enjoying good food, nature, wild animals and an occasional people or two I suppose. Plus maybe the tiniest bit of shopping...See you later!
First impression
2007-05-10 02:19:00
My first impression of South Africa - apart from the Joburg airport and the more than friendly helper who got us from the international terminal to the national. Quite a walk there... And the busy, busy working with finishing a new, modern, updated South Africa for the 2010 World Soccer games - was the townships from above. It's actually true, it exists. Exists beyond what you might think, areas of townships unbelievably vast, unbelievably run down - and not seldom rather close to houses and areas of unbelievable monetary wealth. It's really, really difficult to take in... To accept and say "that's the way it is, the way things are in this country, at this continent", something that don't come easy for a Swede that believes in equal rights and at least some basic human rights for everyone. Like a proper house with four walls. For a Swede that believes in something as simple and basic as municipal transportation like buses instead of road-signs that say "Hitchhiking forbidden" or wa...
Cape L'Agulhas, where the Atlantic meets the Indian
2007-05-10 02:19:00
Contrary to popular belief, Cape of Good Hope IS NOT the most southern point of the African continent. That little tip is actually situated quite a bit further to the east. I bet this was news for you? Maybe even the most exciting piece of news you got today? Anyway, of course we went to Cape of Good Hope too and Cape Point, which both are situated in the pretty vast area of Cape of Good Hope Nature reserve. The Hope and Point being both crowded and touristy - two of my least favourite things, on holidays or otherwise. The actual southern tip, Cape L'Agulhas, was anything but crowded. On a sunny day in February with mild breezes and a temperature showing around +40 C one might be as content as above, with being just in the middle between the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean. I bet you can see how happy my little, faithful, orange companion Elvira is too? She was actually THE perfect companion, not only because she could carry so many things for me, but also since so much of Afric...
Little green man
2007-05-10 02:19:00
I was going to continue writing about the days on safari and the charming way we stayed in a hut without electricity - but I'm grateful to say with hot water - at Schotia game reserve. But right now I just don't have the inspiration for it - but hey here's a little green man (?) who accompanied me on the toilet one morning, when on safari. Soo much bigger than the ones we're used to in Sweden...He wasn't much of a talker though, more like a silent Peeping Tom, with those huge, black eyes.
An experience for life - Robben Island
2007-05-10 02:19:00
Some of the things I've begun collecting these past few years, both mentally and very literally (when possible) are quotations and wise words. Sometimes the wisest things can be said by very few words. When one sadly never cease to be amazed and horrified by the cruelty of the humankind and its predisposition towards doing harm - one can also find hope in all those wise word and quotations, ancient as well as more recent. And of course all the good deeds that are being done all over the world.I've recently had an experience that was one of the most horrific as well as one of the most amazing ones I've so far had in my entire life - the visit to Robben Island. Such a place of unbeliveable cruelty and yet such a place of hope and humankind's will to overcome hardship and ability to do good, even at the lowest point in life. That experience was so unbelievably powerful and emotional, I cried my heart out then. And I still do when thinking about it. It's ok in private, it doesn't fe...
Rock the waves
2007-05-10 02:19:00
It's not completely decided - who knows what might happened... - but still, in general terms, sometimes you get offers you can't refuse. Or perhaps shouldn't refuse, for various reasons. Though like most things, decisions are better made after some discussions, thoughts and a good night's sleep...And isn't it silly, the first reaction is something like "wow, someone wants me for this!" accompanied by "but is it something I want?" - and then the little doubt-gnome whispers in your ear. And that occupational injury called too much, way too much, analyzing appears.A bit of analyzing is good, but tend to be a bit too much too often, rather a rule than an exception in my case. Both when it comes to private matters as well as the occupational ones.In my line of work that analyzing skill is quite a good thing, but still it tends to get too much everywhere and all the time. The one thing is that I actually used to be even more analyzing than I am now...Talked things through with a frie...
