New free website template: Daleri Single
2009-06-01 04:16:00
Here is a screenshot of the single column template mentioned in my previous post. Click the image to go to the template demo and download page: This template is currently only available through GFWD, but as mentioned it will be added to my own free templates page soon. More templates are on their way. Watch this space or my GFWD page for new releases during the next couple of days.

New themes for Drupal
2009-06-01 04:16:00
Activity will be low here until I get the new design up. It is actually going well, even though other design projects take up a lot of time right now. In the meantime, I want to share a couple of links that may be intersting to you. First of all, the 1024px, Daleri Selection and Daleri Mega templates have been ported into Drupal themes by Nick Young. Since I don't use Drupal myself I haven't been able to try the ports myself, but the live demos look very interesting. For one example among others, the 1024px theme includes the left/right sidebar option that is included in the original template. Nick also writes that he has got requests for more ports of my templates, and that more Drupal themes are underway - including one theme that will include all andreasXX (00 to 09) designs in one theme package using subthemes. I'm looking forward to see that! Second, I've released a new template called Daleri Single. It is a simple one-column design, made with simple code th...

Daleri Structure as a WordPress theme
2009-06-01 04:16:00
Johanna decided to rebuild her kennel website into a Word Press site, after running it as a manually coded HTML site for over a year. She wanted to use the Daleri Structure template design, so I converted it into a WordPress theme for her. It took three days to get the site completed. I worked on the theme, while Johanna did all the content work. The result looks pretty sweet! The english version has not been added yet, but feel free to take a look if you want to see what our four-legged family members look like. Regarding the Daleri templates, I have got updated versions of the templates from Jason Cole, who fixed an error that broke the layout when the template was viewed in IE6. I will upload the updated templates soon, along with updated versions of the other templates. Jason has also made a range of alternate versions of the templates. Those can be found . Other priorities now is redesigning this site, updating all WordPress themes to work with the new comment system in WP 2.7 a...

Replacing WordPress with a free website template
2009-01-06 23:20:00
In my ongoing online re-organization work, one of many projects is to reduce the number of domains and minor websites I manage in order to use more time and energy on a few high-priority websites. Several of my sites are non-public and used only for specific purposes, such as developing and testing free WordPress themes or showcase a custom template, theme or marketing idea for a client. It is useful to have a separate development site for WordPress themes, but impractical to have six such sites because of all the extra maintenance work it takes to keep the sites up to date. I also have a couple of small and public sites that don't have any actual purpose. One such site was andreasviklund.se where I made an attempt at writing a Swedish blog some time ago, only to give up on that plan after a few days. Instead, I ended up using the site to promote a couple of Swedish WordPress themes and a free MP3 album with 12 short and instrumental songs that could be used as ringtones on mob...

Sorting, organizing, tagging, uploading - almost done!
2009-01-03 22:12:00
170+ MP3 songs in various genres, adding up to more than 12 hours of music, sorted into 9 (or possibly 10) MP3 albums. Every single file is fully ID3-tagged and includes the proper cover art. And the entire package (which is still untitled) will soon be free to download from this site, free to share and free to use for non-commercial purposes. It will be an almost complete collection of the music I have created - or been involved in creating. The collection will include almost all Lagoona releases, along with a large number of remixes, co-productions and maybe even a few live tracks. It will be my way of finally putting an end to the amazing music adventures of my past, and let me move on to the next adventure in the world of melodies. Expect the release and a longer post about this topic in a few days.

Downtime?
2009-01-02 23:28:00
Yesterday I realized that I will not be able to pay for monthly renewal fee to my web host in time. For almost two years my hosting account has had the 7th of every month as the renewal deadline. When I upgraded my hosting account a month ago, I expected the date to remain the same. I made arrangements to pay the monthly fee on January 5th, which is a bit ironic since I thought "I will rather pay two days early this time than challenging destiny by waiting to the last day"… However, the upgrade was made on December 3rd, so the renewal date was changed. The four last days of my previous hosting solution (the Elite VPS service from SiteGround) had been lost along with the money I had already paid for those days. Now, I don't really care about that. It was just not what I expected. I contacted SiteGround immediately when I discovered the changed date and asked if I could make the renewal on Monday the 5th instead, while keeping the site online in the meantime. With...

Time to suit up!
2009-01-01 22:55:00
I mentioned my idea to start blogging for real, just for the fun of it. The plan is still on, once I have got the inspiration to clean out old and outdated material from the site. I did consider to use some other domain for the blog in order to keep things calm and quiet, knowing very well that most visitors here are many times more interested in my work than in myself. But after all, this is my online home and the domain that my friends and family associate me with. It is also the site people find if they search for my name, so why make things complicated? There will still be plenty of work around, and I will also provide a bit more insight on what motivates me to do what I do - and to keep my templates free. Anyone interested in the human behind the code will be able to find out a lot of useless and boring information, but I'll make it easy to filter out interesting and relevant content through categories and tags. Once again, as soon as I have cleaned out the dust. I will al...

Upgraded!
2008-12-08 00:30:00
Within the next couple of days, I'm upgrading my hosting plan. You may see some downtime, but if so, it is planned and for a good purpose. I will be back with news once the upgrade is complete - and I think that atleast a few of you will like the story. See you soon! Updated a few hours later: Ok, that didn't take as long as I had expected. The upgrade has been made already, andreasviklund.com is now running on a dedicated server from SiteGround! It is a major upgrade in terms of features and performance, which at the same time reduces my hosting costs with $20 per month. I am typically wary about making changes to my hosting, but this was a fairly easy decision to make. And thanks to the great support team at SiteGround, the switch has been completely pain-free. The upgrade is perfectly in line with my ideas, plans and priorities for 2009. I am planning to bring this site to life again, now that we (Johanna and I) have got a good start with our company and it looks like o...

Away goes the dust?
2008-10-13 07:24:00
After another long time of total silence, I've finally got started with cleaning up the site and removing outdated content. Which is basically all the content except for the website templates. Most blog posts will be deleted in a day or two to give room for something new. Perhaps a new attempt at blogging, perhaps just regular posts about templates and themes. I have a number of them piled up for release since a long time, but you have all heard that before so I'll spare you the promises this time. I also hope that I'll get the WordPress themes page sorted out in a similar way as the templates page, because the themes page is still terrible… Speaking of themes, I have just found out through this post that WP-Andreas01 has reached 25.000 downloads on the official WordPress themes directory, making it the 2nd most downloaded WordPress theme on the site after the Tarski theme. With thousands of bloggers using the theme live today, it is a shame that I don't ha...

Peaking the charts
2008-08-11 07:36:00
First of all, music! Only four days after posting a link to the old Leeloo Project music page on the classic free music site Beatmaka.com, the three Leeloo Project remixes are ranked #1, #2 and #3 on the Beatmaka music chart. While it is not very hard to achieve (Beatmaka appears to be very silent nowadays), it brings back warm memories of the Lagoona era and the way producers tried to outshine eachother with new and fresh songs. There are still some amazing tracks to find on the site, so it is a bit sad to see the low activity. Second, Word Press themes! Since the opening of the new WordPress theme directory and the release of three of my themes there, I have browsed through lots of great themes. And I've followed the "most popular" list with big interest to learn more about what makes a theme more interesting. Yesterday I noticed that WP-Andreas01 was one of the featured themes on the frontpage, and that it is currently the most popular theme out of the 145 that have...

2008-08-07 03:20:00
I have mentioned the Leeloo Project before, and referred to it as my new band. Things are slowly starting to happen, and the official website will be launched soon. I will probably write a lot more about the band and the adventure that it will be (not to forget, the amazing skills of Perzzon, the other half of the duo) but I'll save that for now and just post an interesting link to classic music site Beatmaka.com where you can listen to three full remixes for free: Listen to The Leeloo Project (click the "play" buttons)

WordPress theme news
2008-07-24 23:29:00
With the opening of the new official WordPress theme directory on WordPress.org, you will see a number of changes on my WordPress themes page. I will have as many of my themes hosted on the theme site as possible, and I am now uploading the themes as they are updated. Two themes have been approved so far, WP-Andreas01 (updated to v2.0) and the new Daleri Sweet. 1024px is awaiting its review and approval and will probably be added in a few days. You can see live previews of the themes, grade them and find many other good themes on the site, and it is well worth a visit even though the number of themes is low so far. All themes are reviewed in detail before approval to ensure that they meet the requirements for being hosted on WordPress.org. All my approved themes are listed on my userpage, and you can also subscribe to the andreas tag to stay updated on new releases and updates.

Free ringtones for your mobile phone
2008-07-17 14:53:00
In my slowly ongoing project to organize my old music and sort out the best pieces, time has now come to do something about all the many intros and semi-finished songs that I have made over the years. Out of about 150 unfinished songs and a few released ones, I have gathered 12 tracks in different genres that have one thing in common: They are all suitable as mobile phone ringtones. Short, melodic and instrumental, these old clips (made between 1997 and 2002) are not that good - but if you want a somewhat different and pretty unique MP3 ringtone in your phone then you may want to listen to these songs. The files are released in the form of an MP3 album which is simply called "Ringtones". Like all of my music, these songs are free to download and free to use. And free to share with your friends if you would want to. All I ask for is that you leave the ID3 tags intact. Here are the direct download links: Andreas Viklund - Ringtones Arpchords.mp3 (0:59, 1.4 Mb) For something...

How to customize a website template
2008-07-12 12:02:00
…or rather one out of many possible ways to do it: This screencast by WebBriefcase shows how to edit a copy of andreas07 using a visual editor, without having to write any code at all. It shows only the basics, but it may still be interesting to see since it shows one of the best things about using templates: You can get a complete website done very quickly, and the result can be really good. WebBriefcase has a lot of other interesting articles and tutorials for site owners, bloggers and template users - it is well worth a visit.

And another one: Daleri Mega
2008-07-09 23:23:00
The new free website template in the Daleri series, Daleri Mega was not made with simplicity in mind. It was made to give you options and variation. With 2-5 columns, the same kind of menu that Daleri Structure has (although expanded) and fluid width it is a pretty advanced design for coming from me. But it is of course still usable and functional, validating as XHTML 1.0 Strict and CSS 2.1 - and working well in all modern browsers that I have tested it with - including my mobile phone. Like the previous release, this is a mostly text-based design. The .zip download size is 5 kilobytes… Here is the screenshot, click it to go to the template page where you get links to downloads and a live demo. Once again, this is a co-operation with B4Contact. Download: Daleri Mega v1.0 (5 KB .zip)

New CSS template: Daleri Structure
2008-07-07 21:28:00
The Daleri Structure XHTML/CSS website template has now been released! It is a mostly text-based design with several different menu options, made with content-heavy websites in mind. The main menu is made in a way that works differently than my previous templates. It is a definition list with four columns, with an optional horizontal link menu and the possibility to add nested lists of link buttons in the sidebar as well. The layout can have 2 or 3 columns, or a combination of both. The layout fits the standard 1024px width, but it can easily be narrowed down to 800px or made fluid if wanted. Download: Daleri Structure v1.0 (18 KB .zip) Daleri Structure was released in co-operation with B4Contact and Web Designers Sharing Point. If you would want to port it to WordPress, Drupal or any other CMS, please let me know and I'll make sure to link to the ported versions from here. In other news, all my old templates have now been updated and given their own template pages. See the ne...

WordPress på svenska - Nytt tema: "Dagboken"

This post is for my Swedish readers, so I apologize in advance for the language switch below. The text says that I have released a new original Word Press theme in Swedish, and that I will soon translate my English themes into Swedish. The Swedish themes will be hosted on a separate site that I will open soon. It will not affect this website in any way…

New WordPress theme: Daleri Sweet v1.0
2008-05-29 21:40:00
Here is a theme which I have been planning to release for a long time. It was made together with Johanna for her own blog several months ago, but the public version of the theme didn't get finished as we planned and the theme was abandoned for months. After finishing the update of the 1024px theme I moved on to finish this one. It is basically a mix between Daleri Selection, Elven.nu, this website and the 1024px theme - with lots of re-used styles here and there. Not very original at all. When we started writing it, it was built as an ILEVA concept production (anyone remember ILEVA at all?), but for the public version of the theme we lightened the code up and renamed the theme "Daleri Sweet". It will officially be released in a day, as I have to finish the artwork for alternate color schemes that it will include. Support for WP-tags, gravatars and of course valid XHTML and CSS is included already. If you are curious about the theme, you are welcome to download it in i...

Ten long years?
2008-05-27 18:29:00
An old hero and family member left us today. Molly, the dog my mother (Yvonne) and father (Kjell) got ten years ago when I was still living in my childhood home, had stayed by my fathers side ever since mom passed away year 2000. Molly had a heart of pure gold and will be greatly missed, not only by us humans but also by her friends from Kennel Anthems. I will keep a candle burning tonight for you, Molly. Thanks for everything! Click the image above to download "See the light", a short piece of experimental music that I recorded live in my music studio on a sad day back in 2001 using a randomized arpeggiator and two synthesizers (a Roland JP8000 and a Roland XP-30). It is a strange little melody, but the short recording is still very emotional to me…

WordPress theme news: Updates coming up
2008-05-27 02:36:00
It is a shame that I haven't updated my Word Press themes to include the new features in recent WordPress versions, it should have been done long ago! Anyway, I have finally got myself together and started rewriting the themes and adding missing features. The first theme to be updated will be the 1024px theme in which I have added support for the WordPress tag system (including a sidebar tag cloud by default), category descriptions on category archive pages, gravatars in the comments and general improvements based on recent updates of the original 1024px website template which the theme design is based on. There are still a few details left to add, like the alternative style for moving the sidebar to the right side and the classic 800px modification that will make it possible to scale down the theme width so it works with lower screen widths. I may also include the alternative 1024px inverted style made by Jason Cole, and I need to learn more about the new shortcode feature and ...

Return of the free MP3 albums
2008-05-20 02:24:00
I have spent a lot of time on sorting my old music collection, trying to decide what to keep online and what to clean away. While the personal value is high for many of the older songs, the songs are honestly not very good. Outdated sound, bad technical quality and noisy samples can be heard in most old tracks, but there are still people out there who like to listen to them so I still want to do something good with them. However, it has been more than ten years since the oldest songs were made, and in some way I feel that I want to focus on the songs that means the most to me (and that sounds OK to others) while letting the less good songs get their final rest. I have done that by taking the songs down from this site and re-organizing them into a smaller collection, split into a set of MP3 albums. The oldest album, "Dreams" by TSEC (1998, DayDream Records) is already available in MP3 format on this website. The Lagoona songs have been sorted into their former MP3.com album...

Replacement header images for andreas01
2008-05-19 16:50:00
Ever since I started building website templates, I've had plans to create additional material that could make the templates even more useful. I have mentioned it several times in the blog and in discussions with template users and other designers, and I have also got a lot of requests related to the idea. One of the most common requests are for alternate header images and backgrounds for the different designs, and with the new template pages I have lots of space for this kind of extras. In a recent attack of inspiration I have created a set of replacement header images for the andreas01 template. The package contains 12 images in different styles and colors, all in the same resolution as the original header (front.jpg, the winter street photo) that is included in the template. The header can be replaced by simply deleting or renaming the default front.jpg and copying the new header into the template image folder and then renaming it to front.jpg. Here is a scaled-down screensho...

Updated templates, which means?
2008-04-24 03:12:00
…that the first new template pages have finally been added! Four Seven website templates have been updated, re-formatted and refreshed. And there is more coming up! The rest of the updated templates will be added as soon as I can, and then I will release the new Daleri templates that I have been planning to release for months now. The single template pages were added since I want to have more information about each template, and it would be too messy to have it all on the templates overview page. By adding one page for each design, I can have a longer description, a larger screenshot and a lot of additional material as well. For now, only the basic information has been added to the first pages. But the plan is to add links to alternate versions, older versions, blog/CMS ports and to different websites that use the templates. I am also hoping to add add-on material such as replacement headers, alternate CSS and some other stuff. I have plenty of space to use now, so feel free t...

Going mobile (in a new way)
2008-04-01 11:06:00
I get a surprising amount of questions about publishing versions of my templates for mobile phones and small screens, and I have considered those questions a bit strange since my templates are all-valid XHTML and thereby fully functional in most modern mobile phone browsers. I have tested all my templates with three different mobile phones and five different browsers, and the content in each template is completely readable even though there are a number of not-so-pretty design glitches caused by some browsers rendering of the CSS. But the mobile internet has always been separated from the real thing, mostly because of the limitations that small screens create - and by bandwidth. I have seen several attempts at handling mobile pages differently by reducing bandwidth use and manipulating the look of the content so that it works well with smaller screens. I would prefer to see all websites use valid XHTML and let the mobile internet just be a scaled-down version of the real thing - but...

A general reboot
2008-03-26 12:39:00
The step-by-step approach mentioned in the previous post seems to work a little better for me, even though I haven't made any major changes on the site yet. Instead, I started with turning my home office into a major mess - emptying every box and making giant piles of CD:s and DVD:s on the floor. I spent two days going through all the stuff, throwing away everything that I didn't consider to be valuable and sorting the rest into clever archives that will be very useful for me. In some way, the ideas of having a good structure and a high level of accessibility works well in real life too! I re-arranged the electronic gear as well, moved cables and set up my old Novation K-station so that I can use it when I produce music. And not just through MIDI, I'm bringing the K-station vocoder back to life so I can actually sing with it! What's up with the music? I am pretty sure that the music production will take up a whole lot of my time this spring, and I have felt a con...

New approach: Many small steps?
2008-03-19 14:09:00
After several months of silence, I have started to get e-mails from worried friends and colleagues asking me if I am OK. Thanks everyone! I appreciate that, you are all a great support! I am actually feeling better than in a long time, so the silence is not a sign of problems. But yes, the blog got a terrible break again. After making a big effort to prepare for the design and content update, I just lost all inspiration to work with the site. Completely… I can't explain why that happened, because I don't really know. I just didn't get that next post written, and that is definitely a sign that something needs to change. And that may not just be the site design. More about that later… However, my regular template design work and e-mail support has worked very well during the last two months. I have done a lot of successful work on other sites I run, and I have answered more than 1.400 free support requests in February and March. I have built several new temp...
