Making room for new project
2007-11-20 18:33:00
As you may have noticed there hasn't been a single update on this site since the middle of October. This is due to another web project of mine which I have put pretty much all of my free time into. This new project will replace this site in the end of November, as I have already terminated further registration of the domain name olle-axelsson.se. The main focus of the new website will be aimed at templates - free, high quality, standards-compliant XHTML/CSS templates made by myself. I have actually already produced a first template to be released on the new site. There will also be a section of webdesign resources - probably in the blog form, like on this site. When the time is right, I will put an automatic forward on this site to the new project. Keep your eyes open in the end of November!

Right brain vs. left brain
2007-11-20 18:33:00
In which direction do you see the woman turning - clockwise or counter-clockwise? If clockwise, then you use more of the right side of the brain and vice versa. The majority of the population will se a counter-clockwise turning direction. In either way, you can focus and try to change the direction. Our brain, like the rest of our anatomy, is made up of two halves, a left brain and a right brain. There's a big fold that goes from front to back in our brain, essentially dividing it into two distinct and almost separate parts. They are connected to each other by a thick cable of nerves at the base of each brain. This sole link between the two giant processors is called the corpus collosum. Quest for immortality
2007-10-16 18:26:00
Neuroscientist Anders Sandberg, biomedical gerontologist Aubrey de Grey and philosopher Nick Bostrom talk about the quest for immortality using transhumanism. They discuss the questions "Why should we live forever?", "How can we achieve immortality?", "What techniques will be used?", "How will these techniques evolve?", "If everyone is living longer, how will we deal with overpopulation?", "When will these techniques be possible?". "Sandberg and his fellow transhumanists plan to bypass death by using technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), genetic engineering and nanotechnology to radically accelerate human evolution, eventually merging people with machines to make us immortal. This may not be possible yet, the transhumanists reason, but as long as they live long enough - a few decades perhaps - the technology will surely catch up." - NewScientist.com Read the whole article at NewScientist.com. Touching music overcomes limitations
2007-10-13 02:21:00
Tonight me and my brother watched M. Night Shyamalan's " Lady In The Water " (2006). I myself have seen it several times before but my brother hadn't seen it at all. I always find it intriguing to watch a movie I like very much, together with someone who hasn't seen it before. How interesting it is to see this persons reactions, when he or she reacts and on what. And of course - their final opinion. I was delighted to know that my brother, just as I, really liked "Lady In The Water". I will get back to my fascination for M. Night Shyamalan another time since this post wasn't suppose to be about movies in particular, but the music in movies. The brilliant man you see on the picture to the left is James Newton Howard . A man with great power to create heartbreakingly beautiful masterpieces. The first time I discovered him properly was actually as late as in 2004 when I had fallen in love with, again, M. Night Shyamalan's " The Village ". Sure, I had heard his name be...
Adobe presents new Photoshop family logo
2007-10-12 12:39:00
Recently Adobe introduced the new Photoshop visual logo wich in time will be visible on every marketing related to Photoshop. It is claimed by the press that the logo represents "the rich legacy, technical quality, and attention to detail that has made Photoshop the gold standard in digital imaging". "I've been remiss in not sharing the news sooner, but I wanted to give it a chance not to get overshadowed by the Photoshop Express excitement. In any case, I'm pleased to report that the Photoshop family of products now has its own logo and tagline: See What's Possible?." - John Nack on Adobe The new logo has received a lot of critics. Many people aren't satisfied with it. They can't see the purpose of why the icon is shaped as a dialog box/speech bubble. Some thinks it looks like a reversed iChat icon. The tagline has also been discussed - "Are Illustrator and InDesign next? Illustrator: See what's vectorable". There's even people who claims the logo to b...

phpBB and WordPress unites into WP-United
2007-10-11 18:46:00
For quite some time now phpBB has been one of the most used free open source forum. I've used it myself in several web projects and it's both extremely easy to install and ease to use - as well for the administrator as for the users of the forum. Since the start in 2003, WordPress has grown from a small online publishing tool with half a dussin users to a "state-of-the-art semantic personal publishing platform" in the world with over hundred of thousands users. In other words - WordPress is the most used blog tool in the world today. From now on you can download WP-United - a melting-pot web project which has melted these two giants into one! WP-United can be used for phpBB2 and phpBB3. "WP-United is a powerful yet compact modification for phpBB 2. The package integrates WordPress, the leading blogging and content management tool, into a phpBB community." - wp-united.com Since I'm a loyal sNews user I can't enjoy this WP-United. But one thing is fo...
Renovated and unleashed
2007-10-10 18:33:00
For a week or two there has been a sign hanging on my website door saying that due to renovation the site is down and will be back in a few days. Unfortunately, these "few days" turned into a dozen days. Hopefully, the overtime was worth the result you're looking at now. The main improvements of the site is at the moment mostly aesthetical improvements. The design has received a proper face-lift which I hope you find pleasant. Beside the design part I've implemented some new stuff that wasn't on the last version of the site. If you look at the right section you find a weekly poll made for you users to vote in and also there's a news feed including world top news and webdesign news. Further on there's a pastime section where you can play sudoku and tetris (more activities will be added here). Regarding these games and poll, I will endeavour towards more user activeness and gradually integrate additional elements of this kind. In this way, the site will be more useful and e...
Hidden flight simulator in Google Earth
2007-09-03 16:24:00
In secret, Google planted a brand new function in the 4.2 version of Google Earth . The function is a flight simulator which offers a new, more fun way to view our planet. So far Google doesn't mention the flight simulator in the information about the new version, but hackers have found it. To activate the simulator you just press CTRL + ALT + A in Windows and ALT + Pretzel + A on a Mac. When doing this a Flight Simulator window opens in which you may choose between a F16 fighter and a SR22 sport plane. Further on you choose where to start from - current view (before activating the simulator) or from an airport. For a list of keyboard shortcuts there is a help button in the bottom of the window. Once the flight simulator is activated a shortcut is automatically created under "Tools" in the main menu of Google Earth, so you don't have to use the keyboard command every time. Have a nice flight!

Tafiti of Microsoft Silverlight
2007-08-24 15:40:00
In 2007 Microsoft launched an animated search engine - Tafiti - to showcase Silver light animation. Silverlight has animation, vector graphics, and video playback capabilities and aims to compete with Adobe Flash, JavaFX and Ajax presentation components. I don't think Tafiti, which by the way comes from the Swahili word for "do research", ever will reach the popularity of Google. Still, it is a really good-looking search tool!

Google Sky released
2007-08-22 16:41:00
Today, Google Sky is released for Google Earth. The "expansion" transforms the program into a virtual telescope aimed towards the massive firmament. "Never before has a roadmap of the entire sky been made so readily available. Anyone interested in exploring the wonders of our universe can quickly see where the stunning objects photographed by Hubble actually dwell in the heavens. Sky in Google Earth will foster and initiate new understanding of the universe by bringing it to everyone's home computer." - Dr. Carol Christian of STScI In the same way you can zoom in places on the Earth, you can now travel deep into cosmos and navigate through 100 million stars and 200 million galaxies. As a complement to the pictures of the universe there's an amount of information about phenomena showing, e.g. hundreds of high resolution images from the space telescope Hubble. Further on there's a function that let you follow the exact orbits of the planets in our galaxy as animate...

Injection Design

Chan Karunamuni is a very skilled web-designer who has been creating websites for about 5 years. Take a look at his portfolio site Injection Design and enjoy the extremely nice webdesigns and graphics that he has achieved. I'm sure you can find a lot of inspiration. "Glass. Polished steel. Carbon fiber. Liquid rubber. Humans by nature love to touch, and that?s why my designs are modeled after real world materials, with lots of attention to light and shadow. This gives a website an eye-popping, tactile feel that leaps out of the screen and amazes your visitors." - Chan

Deep Purple streaming through the headphones. Time has passed midnight for more than an hour ago. Eyelids getting heavy. But here it is - a preview of my next template " Exit wounds ". As you can see I've used a dark color scheme this time. Just like my first template, Emergence , this one is pretty simple. I'm gradually heading for a higher level of complexity in my newly started template designing career. "Exit wounds" will be released within the next two weeks.

3D Total
2007-08-10 01:29:00
I would like to give a tip about an amazing 3D graphics website called 3D Total . The site isn't new at all, it's been around for quite some time now. But if you haven't been there - you've really missed something! Incredible graphic art categorized in scenes, characters, sci-fi, fantasy, cartoon, total textures, 2d/concept and beautiful wallpapers. "It all started in August 1999 as a project to make a simple 3D resource site... Then in July 2001 we released Version 2 of the 3DTotal site, which was seen by 100,000 visitors each month. The latest figures show a tremendous growth to over 1.5 million monthly visitor sessions." - 3D Total Crew One can sit for hours and just be completely fascinated by this delicate art. There is also free stuff available such as models, textures and tutorials.

Study finds weak link in spam business
2007-08-09 18:51:00
Geoff Voelker and Chris Fleizach, University of California - San Diego, have studied more than a million spam e-mails and discovered a weak link in the junk e-mail business. It has been revealed that the web links contained in many spam messages point to very few different servers. This means, in theory, that blocking these specific servers could help make spamming a less profitable business. Geoff and Chris examined the infrastructure behind spam instead of focusing on filtering or blocking spam at the inbox. The spam messages were collected over a single week in 2006, which advertised 2334 distinct companies, ranging from businesses selling legal products to financial scamming sites. When the UCSD team followed web links in each spam message, they found that 94% directed traffic to a single web server. Furthermore, 57% led to a single host based in the US. Source: New Scientist
